What's Hot in Mother's Day Gifts 2012!

Updated on April 28, 2012

Mother's Day 2012 is just around the corner, so I have searched the world to bring you what is hot for mums in 2012.

A quick search for Mother's Day in Amazon has revealed that Flowers again are the #1 item for a mum and in the forums it continues to be a topical theme. Chocolates will also rank high, but I guess that you are reading this hub to get some unique items that your mum will enjoy and to make that special day even more special.

Mother's Day originated from Roman times and in the Christian world was known as mothering Sunday. In the 19th Century the servant girls were given the day off during the fourth Sunday in Lent and took a Simnel cake to their mothers. Today Mother's Day is a time to celebrate your mum and recognise her for the love and affection and jobs she has done for you.

Enough history - now let's get to the hot gifts for 2012!

Lydia Leith - Sick Bags & Jelly Moulds

Lydia Leith has developed a range of products to celebrate the forthcoming Queen's Jubilee. Back in 2010 I bought the Royal Wedding sick bag and gave it to my mum as a mothers day gift. This year you can also celebrate the jubilee by buying your mum:

  • Jubilee Jelly Mould in blue or red for GBP10
  • Jubilee Temporary Tattoos (2 designs) for GBP3
  • Jubilee Sick Bags in blue or red for GBP3

On the web site there are a host of specially designed product from Xmas cards through to prints and Royal Wedding sick bags.

So if you want something unique that your mum will love and remember then the Lydia Leith products need to be #1 on your list.

The RV and Caravanning Mum

My parents like to take their RV (known as a Winnebago in Australia) on holidays. But the kitchen is so small and it is hard to make feasts when you have limited space for ingrediants or space to cook.

Usually they will fire up the BBQ, which is OK for a while, but on a longer trip you may want to try something a bit different. So this is where caravan cook books come in handy as a gift.

The Complete Caravan Chef and Camping Chef books make ideal gifts for mums at under $20 each.

I bought one for my mum a couple of years ago that promised to deliver great meals with 5 ingredients or less. She is still using it today!

Travelling Mum

Baby Boomers the world over are travelling more and more. Especially in Australia due to the strong Aussie Dollar, more parents are heading overseas for the first time.

A couple of products that I have sold a lot of recently are the Rainbird spray jacket. At under $50 and in a range of great colours this makes a great present for your mum, especially if she is headed to the colder climes of Europe.

Another must have when travel is a suitcase. These start at $80 for a cabin bag right up to $400 for a complete set. Another innovative product is the suitcase cover. These retail for under $25 and make your suitcase really standout at the luggage collection area. They also help to stop people tampering with your bag, so adds a level of security.

Both these products are useful gifts for the mums that travel as well as providing added security to your mum while she is overseas.

Make Something

Most mum's love to get something from their children that is home made. Especially when children are younger it is a great way for them to express their love! Here are some ideas:

  • Go to the local hardware store and buy a MDF picture frame. Get the kids to paint it and then put a picture of them into the frame as the gift
  • Walk around the garden and make a huge bouquet of flowers
  • Make a montage of all the things that the kids love about their mum, cut out from magazines and stick this onto a sheet of paper that you can laminate
  • Once again at the hardware store get some MDF coaster and make a set for mum
  • Most hardware stores have a MDF or craft section. Let the kids choose what they would like to make...one year we painted a tissue box and they make a unique gift for your mum
  • Bake a cake or cookies

This is a really great way for a dad to have quality time with their children and to make something that is special for the child and their mum. But, for Dads, maybe a piece of jewelry would add to the 'specialness'!

On Mothers Day

I like to make my wife a full cooked breakfast on Mothers Day - see Chef-de-jour's excellent hub on the full English breakfast (yum!) and get a fire going (it's usually cold in Australia in May).

The kids will burst in early to give the gifts and then she will have some space relax.

For lunch we may visit my mother or head up into the Adelaide Hills to enjoy an afternoon of food and wine. There is an excellent food trail in the Hills where you can buy and sample apple pies, chocolates, berries and of course premium Sav Blanc wines from this region.

But most importantly we get to say thanks to our mums and wives for the love and affection that they give us throughout the year! Happy mother's day to all the mum's in the world.

Cheers Michael
